Ride Your Bike And Watch Tour de Georgia Stages 4 & 5 For FREE!


Tour de Georgia is coming back to Dalton for a fifth year! On Friday April 20, Stage 5 of the Tour will start in Downtown Dalton at 11:00AM and finish atop Brasstown Bald Mountain. To celebrate the Tour returning for the fifth consecutive year, NWGA SORBA, local chapter of the Southern Off Road Bicycle Association, has partnered with the City of Dalton to offer a free, guided and supported road ride on both Thursday and Friday. On Thursday night, Dalton will also be holding the Fifth Wheel Pedal Party downtown!

Bring your road bike to Dalton and spend April 19th and 20th riding to watch two key stages of the Tour, and partying Thursday night at the Fifth Wheel Party. All for FREE!

Everyone who stays at the Wingate Inn who is participating in the free bike ride on Thursday and/or Friday will receive a special deal. The Wingate will offer rooms at the special rate of $65/night for a room with two beds and up to four people! The room rate includes a hot breakfast, pool, jacuzzi, and close proximity to downtown Dalton. You must reserve your room at the Wingate by Wednesday April 11 in order to get this rate. Rooms will be going fast, since the Tour de Georgia pro riders will be staying in Dalton on Thursday night.

More on Fifth Wheel Pedal Party

There will be a free beer for the first 50 riders who register regardless of whether they use the shuttle or not...as long as they are one of the first 50 riders!

There will also be some doorprizes to be given away! There will be a bike show! so bring your bikes downtown! Awards categories are TBD but will include things like the ugliest bike, oldest bike (antique), best decorated bike, biggest bike, smallest bike, etc....

There will also be a unicycle race! so if you have a unicycle bring it out to compete!

Booths will all be setup under the parking deck (so no tent will be needed - just tables) Booths for non-profits will be free - but must register ALSO - any vendor who is registered to setup Friday morning for the Stage 5 Start can setup for free that Thursday night under the parking deck too! Booths need to be setup around 4PM!

The Blues Band will be on the street in front of Planet of The Grapes on the street (this street will be closed) This is also where the beer will be.

The bike games with the kids from Boys and Girls Club will be on this street as well starting at 5PM.....

The Unicycle Race and bike show will be on this street too.

Everything will be free except the food and beer (unless you are one of the first 50 riders to register).

Meet in Pentz Street Station Downtown Dalton on Pentz Street and King Street. There is a large parking deck near BB&T Bank on corner also parking spaces on both sides of the parking deck.

8:00AM

 

Option #1 – Ride a shuttle bus with your bicycle and get shuttled to the Stage 4 Starting area in Chickamauga, GA. Once there you will be free to watch the Pro’s start their Time Trial or ride your bike to Nickajack Gap to watch the climb up Lookout Mtn, or ride to the finish line area near Rock City. A SAG vehicle with a trailer for your personal gear will be parked in Chickamauga for your convenience.

NOTE: This shuttle option is limited to first 50 people who register. To register, please email cfernan62@nwgasorba.org. Space is limited, so please register early!


Option #2 – Ride your bike from Downtown Dalton to Chickamauga, GA approximately 25 miles. Once there you will be free to watch the Pro’s start their Time Trial or ride your bike to Nickajack Gap to watch the climb up Lookout Mtn, or ride to the finish line area near Rock City.

A SAG vehicle with a trailer for your personal gear will be parked in Chickamauga for your convenience. This ride will have local volunteer cyclists acting as ride leaders. This option is open to everyone, however be prepared to ride approximately 50 miles total round trip for the day.

 

3:30PM

All riders from both options regroup at the SAG trailer in Chickamauga for a supported group ride back to Dalton. This ride will be approximately 25 miles over rolling terrain with one strenuous but short climb over Taylor’s Ridge. The ride will finish around 5:30 PM in Downtown Dalton at the Fifth Wheel Pedal Party! The party is free and will be held outside on the street. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

 

5:30PM

The Fifth Wheel Pedal Party sponsored in part by NWGA SORBA and the City of Dalton will kick off downtown! The theme of the party will be promoting healthy lifestyles. There will be food and beverages for sale along with some fun activities.

Road ride leaves out from downtown following sections of the actual Tour route. This ride will climb Fort Mountain to watch the King of the Mountain line! After all pro riders pass over the mountain and the road reopens, riders will be free to ride back to Dalton. This ride will be around 50 miles total in length with a mountain climb of roughly 8 miles in the middle. There will be a SAG trailer supporting this ride. This ride is free and open to an unlimited number of riders. Estimated return time to Dalton (by bicycle) will be approximately 1:30PM. This ride will have local volunteer cyclists as ride leaders.

NOTE: Rides on both Thursday and Friday are free and at your own risk. You will need to sign a waiver the morning of each ride. A SAG vehicle will be available each day to carry any personal items you wish to take along such as food, camera, or clothing. Make sure your personal gear is bagged and clearly labeled with your name. NWGA SORBA will not accept responsibility for lost or damaged items.
